How to Set Goals for Life and for Business
Regardless of whether it be in business or in life setting goals gives us long-term vision and short-term motivation. Without goals, you lack focus and direction.

Goal setting not only allows you to take control of your life's direction; it also provides you a benchmark for determining whether you are actually succeeding.

‘If you aim at nothing, you will hit it every time’ – Zig Ziglar

Goal setting is much more than simply saying you want something to happen.

Unless you clearly define exactly what you want and understand why you want it in the first place, your odds of success are considerably reduced.

Furthermore, goal setting isn’t reserved for major life events like buying your first car or even getting your own house but also plays a major role in ordinary, everyday life.

Most people want to achieve their goals, but don’t want to put in the work to do so. The cliché goes, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.”

But we all know just how few and far between the “tough” really are from those who have a tendency to simply give up.

SMART is an acronym that you can use to guide your goal setting.

S- Specific
It is essential that you have clarity on what EXACTLY your goal is. It must precise, detailed, and capable of answering questions as opposed to creating more.

M- Measurable
Your goal needs to be exact and quantifiable. Include dates, exact financial numbers, and amounts in your goal.

You don’t want to make broad, sweeping statements such as ‘I want to make more money’, it has to be specific in all elements; for example...
‘I will generate $10,000 extra dollars by December 31st 2020’. If the goal is in several steps, each step must be measurable, as well.

A- Attainable
It needs to be achievable. You should be able to accomplish it within the constraints of time, money, environment, as well as your skills and abilities and other important factors.

R- Realistic
Goals should be in line with the path that you’re heading in life. Keep your goals in line with your true purpose.

Don’t waste time with unrealistic goals as they will only result in disappointment and ultimately waste time in achieving your actual goals!

T- Time
Your goals need to have deadlines. Creating a target date to bound completion creates accountability and gives you more motivation to achieve them.

However, it is important to recognize that if you don’t achieve your goal by your specific date, that’s ok too – life happens! Just adjust and keep moving forward with the end in sight.

When you finally realize that you have the power to make your life whatever you want it to be it is extremely freeing.

It’s a wonderful feeling knowing that your success does not really depend on anyone else, so get out there and set your goals in life and in business knowing that you can truly achieve anything you set your mind to!
